serial port

One-bit-at-a-time interface

A serial port is a computer interface that transmits data one bit at a time in sequence, as opposed to parallel ports that send multiple bits simultaneously.

Serial ports were once standard on personal computers for connecting mice, modems, and other peripherals: I need an adapter to connect this old printer to the serial port.

Though largely replaced by USB, serial connections remain common in industrial equipment and embedded systems.
