IRQ
Processor attention request
IRQ stands for interrupt request, a hardware signal that tells a processor to pause what it's doing and handle something more urgent.
In early personal computers, users often had to manually assign IRQ numbers to avoid conflicts between devices: The sound card and modem are fighting over IRQ 5.
Modern systems handle this automatically, but the term persists in technical troubleshooting.
