flow control
Directing liquid movement
Flow control refers to mechanisms that regulate the rate or timing of data transmission between systems, preventing a fast sender from overwhelming a slow receiver.
In networking and serial communication, flow control ensures that buffers don't overflow and data isn't lost.
Hardware flow control uses dedicated signal lines, while software flow control embeds special characters in the data stream.
The term also applies more broadly to any system that manages throughput: The dam provides flow control for the river downstream.
