abolition

Formal ending entirely

Abolition is the act of formally ending or eliminating something, typically a system, practice, or institution.

The word most often refers to the movement to end slavery, particularly in 19th-century America and Britain: Abolition became the defining cause of his life.

It applies to ending other practices as well: the abolition of the death penalty, abolition of monarchy.

An abolitionist advocates for such elimination.
