manumission
Slaveholder releases captive
Manumission is the formal release of a person from slavery or bondage.
The term appears primarily in historical and legal contexts: The Virginia planter's will provided for the manumission of his enslaved workers upon his death.
A slaveholder who manumitted someone was granting them legal freedom, though this often came with restrictions on where the freed person could live or work.
