lord

Noble estate holder

A lord is someone with power or authority over others—historically, a feudal superior who owned land and commanded allegiance from those living on it.

The word extends to anyone with dominion: lord of the manor, drug lord, landlord.

To lord over someone is to exercise authority in an overbearing way: He lorded his seniority over the new hires.

In British usage, Lord is a title for certain nobles and high officials, and the House of Lords is the upper chamber of Parliament.

Lord and the Lord refer to God or Jesus Christ in religious contexts: The Lord is my shepherd. (Capitalized LORD in small caps appears in many Bible translations to represent the divine name.)
