yeoman
Self-sufficient landholder
A yeoman was historically a farmer who owned and worked his own land—a step above a peasant but below the gentry.
The word survives mainly in the phrase yeoman's work or yeoman service, meaning diligent, effective labor: She did yeoman's work organizing the conference.
A yeoman of the guard is a ceremonial bodyguard at the British royal court.
