suzerainty
Partial foreign control
Suzerainty is a relationship in which one state controls another's foreign affairs while allowing it internal autonomy.
The dominant power is the suzerain; the subordinate is the vassal state.
The term describes arrangements that fall short of full annexation but exceed mere alliance: Britain exercised suzerainty over several Indian princely states.
The word now appears mostly in historical contexts or discussions of quasi-imperial relationships.
