bondsman

Posts bail professionally

A bondsman is someone who provides surety for another—guaranteeing money or pledging to ensure someone appears in court.

In the bail bond industry, a bondsman posts bail for defendants who can't afford it, charging a fee (typically 10%) for the service: The bondsman got him out of jail overnight.

Historically, bondsman also meant a person bound in servitude—a slave or serf.
