fief
Vassal's granted land
A fief is land granted by a lord to a vassal in exchange for loyalty and service—the basic unit of the medieval feudal system.
The vassal held the fief but didn't own it outright; obligations flowed both ways.
Figuratively, a fief is any domain someone controls as their personal territory: The department became his fief, and he ran it like a medieval baron.
