fallow

Resting between crops

Fallow describes land left unplanted for a season or more, allowing soil to recover its fertility.

The word extends to any period of dormancy or inactivity: After two novels in quick succession, she let her imagination lie fallow.

Fallow can suggest either restorative rest or unproductive idleness, depending on context.

As a noun, fallow is uncultivated ground.

Separately, fallow describes a pale brownish-yellow color, as in fallow deer.
