thralldom

State of enslavement

Thralldom is the state of being in bondage or servitude—held captive by another's power.

A thrall was originally a slave in Viking society, and thralldom retains that sense of complete subjugation.

The word appears in literary or elevated contexts: the thralldom of addiction, escape from thralldom.

Also spelled thraldom.
