ridge pole

Topmost roof beam

A ridge pole is the horizontal beam running along the peak of a roof, where the two sloping sides meet at the top.

Rafters attach to it from both sides.

In tent construction, the ridge pole serves the same function—the highest horizontal support from which the fabric slopes down: We strung the ridge pole between two trees.
