bearing wall
Load-carrying partition
A bearing wall is a wall that supports weight from above—typically floor joists, roof structures, or upper stories—transferring that load down to the foundation.
Unlike partition walls, which merely divide spaces, bearing walls are structural and cannot be removed without compromising the building's integrity.
Also called a load-bearing wall.
