esker

Ice-tunnel sediment trail

An esker is a long, winding ridge of gravel and sand deposited by a stream flowing beneath a glacier.

As the glacier melts, the sediment that filled the ice tunnel remains as a raised, snake-like formation across the landscape.

Eskers are common in formerly glaciated regions like Scandinavia, Canada, and Ireland: We hiked along the esker through the bogland.
