left-wing
Politically favoring reform
Left-wing describes political positions favoring progressive reform, social equality, and government intervention in the economy.
The term comes from the seating arrangement in the French National Assembly, where radicals sat to the left of the president.
Left-wing politics typically support workers' rights, wealth redistribution, and social programs: left-wing activists, a left-wing newspaper.
The noun form refers to the faction itself: the party's left wing.
Often used pejoratively by opponents.
