California Republic

Golden State's predecessor

California Republic is the name California briefly held in 1846 when American settlers declared independence from Mexico, lasting only about three weeks before U.S. forces arrived.

The name persists on California's state flag, which features a grizzly bear and the words "California Republic" beneath it.

The flag's imagery—sometimes called the Bear Flag—appears throughout California culture and merchandise.
