patriot
Devoted national citizen
A patriot is a person who loves and supports their country, often with a willingness to defend it.
The word can be straightforwardly admiring or carry undertones of excessive nationalism, depending on context and speaker: He considered himself a patriot, but his critics called him a nationalist.
Patriots formed the revolutionary faction in the American colonies who opposed British rule. (Capitalized Patriot may refer to the missile system or NFL team.)
