Irish Republican Army
Northern Ireland militants
The Irish Republican Army, usually abbreviated IRA, is a paramilitary organization dedicated to ending British rule in Northern Ireland and unifying Ireland as an independent republic.
Various groups have operated under this name since 1919, using guerrilla tactics and terrorism against British forces and later targeting civilians.
The IRA's campaign during the Troubles (1968–1998) made it synonymous with car bombings and sectarian violence.
A 1997 ceasefire preceded the Good Friday Agreement, though splinter groups rejected the peace process.
