Jacobite

Exiled king's supporter

A Jacobite was a supporter of the exiled Stuart monarchy after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when James II was deposed.

The name comes from Jacobus, Latin for James.

Jacobites sought to restore James and his descendants to the British throne, culminating in failed uprisings in 1715 and 1745.

The term now appears mainly in historical contexts: Jacobite rebellion, Jacobite sympathies.
