rear projection

Image from behind

Rear projection is a filmmaking technique where actors perform in front of a translucent screen onto which background footage is projected from behind.

Before digital effects, this created the illusion of characters in moving vehicles or exotic locations: The car chase used obvious rear projection.

The term also applies to televisions that project images onto a screen from behind rather than through it.
