matte painting
Illusory film background
A matte painting is a painted image used in film and photography to create the illusion of an environment that would be too expensive or impossible to build or visit.
Traditionally painted on glass and combined with live footage, modern matte paintings are created digitally.
The technique extends backgrounds, adds cityscapes, or creates fantastical landscapes: The alien planet was entirely matte painting.
