backlot
Outdoor filming area
A backlot is the outdoor area of a movie studio where large sets are built—city streets, Western towns, medieval villages.
These permanent or semi-permanent structures allow filming without location travel: Half of old Hollywood was shot on the backlot.
The term evokes classic studio-era filmmaking, when major productions rarely left the lot.
