film noir
Hard-boiled cinema
Film noir is a style of crime film marked by cynical characters, shadowy visual style, and morally ambiguous plots.
The French term means "black film," referring to both the dark cinematography and bleak worldview.
Classic examples from the 1940s and 50s feature hard-boiled detectives, femmes fatales, and urban settings drenched in shadow: Chinatown is a perfect film noir.
Neo-noir applies the style to contemporary settings.
