voyageur

Canadian canoe trader

A voyageur was a French-Canadian boatman who transported furs and trade goods by canoe through the North American interior during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The term evokes the rugged wilderness travel of the fur trade era: The voyageurs paddled eighteen hours a day through the lake country.

Now used historically or to suggest hardy outdoor adventure.
