portaging

Canoe over land

Portaging is the act of carrying a boat and gear overland between navigable waters or around an obstacle like rapids or a waterfall.

The term comes from canoe travel, where paddlers must periodically leave the water: We spent the morning portaging around the falls.

It can also mean transporting goods across any such route.
