cascade

Water over cliffs

A cascade is a waterfall, especially one of several falling in stages down a rocky slope.

The word extends to anything that flows or falls in a similar pattern: a cascade of auburn hair, a cascade of events.

In technical contexts, cascade describes processes that trigger subsequent processes in sequence—a cascade of failures, a cascade effect in electronics.

As a verb, things cascade when they pour or tumble downward in stages: Water cascaded over the rocks. (Capitalized Cascade refers to the mountain range.)
