latitude and longitude
Earth's address system
Latitude and longitude form a coordinate system for locating any point on Earth's surface.
Latitude measures north-south position from the equator (0°) to the poles (90°).
Longitude measures east-west position from the Prime Meridian (0°) through Greenwich, England.
Together they pinpoint locations: The coordinates are 40° latitude, 74° longitude.
Figuratively, latitude alone means freedom or leeway: The job gives me latitude to set my own hours.
