indigenous names
Original peoples' terms
Indigenous names are the original names that native peoples use for places, peoples, or things—as opposed to names imposed by colonizers or outsiders.
Efforts to restore indigenous names have replaced some colonial-era designations: Denali for Mount McKinley, Uluru for Ayers Rock.
The term also applies to traditional personal names within indigenous communities, sometimes reclaimed after generations of imposed European names.
