Geographic name index
A gazetteer is a geographical dictionary or index—an alphabetical listing of place names with information about location, population, or features.
Gazetteers appear as standalone reference works or as appendices to atlases.
The term comes from *gazette*, an official journal, suggesting authoritative geographic record-keeping.
