common noun
Everyday word category
A common noun is an ordinary noun that names a general category rather than a specific individual—*dog* rather than *Fido*, *city* rather than *Paris*.
Common nouns take lowercase and can be preceded by articles: a chair, the government, some ideas.
They contrast with proper nouns, which name particular people, places, or things and take capitals.
