electrotype

Printing plate replica

An electrotype is a metal copy of a printing surface, made by coating a mold with a thin layer of metal through electroplating.

The technique was widely used in 19th and early 20th century printing to create durable duplicates of original typeset pages or engravings, allowing printers to run multiple presses from a single original or preserve fragile woodcuts.

As a verb, electrotype means to produce such a copy.

The process has been largely superseded by modern printing technologies.
