mechanicals
Skilled trade workers
Mechanicals are the technical elements of a publication's layout—the camera-ready pages showing exact placement of text, images, and graphics before printing.
In traditional publishing, preparing mechanicals meant pasting type and artwork onto boards.
The term persists in digital publishing for final production files.
In theater, mechanicals are the technical crew handling sets, lighting, and effects—or, from Shakespeare's *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, the amateur craftsmen who perform a play-within-the-play.
