peninsula

Land nearly surrounded

A peninsula is a piece of land that projects into a body of water, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip: the Italian peninsula, the Korean Peninsula.

The word captures the idea of being almost an island—surrounded by water on three sides but not quite cut off.

Florida and Baja California are peninsulas.
