seamount

Underwater volcanic rise

A seamount is an underwater mountain rising from the ocean floor but not reaching the surface.

Unlike islands, seamounts remain submerged, often by thousands of feet.

They form from volcanic activity and serve as important marine habitats, attracting diverse sea life: The expedition mapped several previously unknown seamounts in the Pacific.
