gulf

Landlocked sea arm

A gulf is a large body of water partially enclosed by land—bigger than a bay: the Gulf of Mexico, the Persian Gulf.

Extended, gulf means any wide separation or difference: the gulf between rich and poor, a gulf of misunderstanding.

The word emphasizes vastness and difficulty of crossing, whether geographic or metaphorical. (Capitalized Gulf often refers specifically to the Persian Gulf or Gulf of Mexico region.)
