fjord

Cliff-walled sea arm

A fjord is a long, narrow inlet of sea between steep cliffs, formed by glacial erosion.

Fjords are characteristic of Norway's coastline but appear wherever mountains meet the sea in formerly glaciated regions: We sailed deep into the fjord, cliffs rising on both sides.

Also spelled fiord.
