exception

Not the norm

An exception is something that doesn't follow the general rule or pattern.

If most students failed but one passed, that student is the exception.

The phrase with the exception of means excluding or apart from: Everyone attended with the exception of Tom.

To take exception to something is to object to it or be offended by it.

In computing and law, exception has technical meanings: a runtime error that disrupts normal program flow, or a formal objection to a court ruling.
