scheme

Underhanded master strategy

A scheme is a plan, especially one that's systematic or cleverly devised: a scheme to defraud investors, a get-rich-quick scheme.

The word often carries a whiff of deviousness—to scheme is to plot.

In British usage, scheme is more neutral, describing any organized plan: a pension scheme, a colour scheme.

The word also applies to abstract arrangements: rhyme scheme, classification scheme.
