pastoralist
Nomadic animal keeper
A pastoralist is someone who raises livestock by moving them to fresh grazing lands rather than keeping them in one place.
This practice, called pastoralism, has been central to human societies for thousands of years and remains common in regions where terrain or climate makes settled farming impractical.
Pastoralists in the Sahel follow seasonal rains with their cattle herds.
The term also describes scholars who study pastoral communities or advocate for their interests.
