hides

Keeps from view

Hides covers two unrelated words.

One is the verb hide—to conceal or keep secret: She hides her feelings well.

What's hidden is out of sight or knowledge.

A hiding place conceals; to hide out is to stay concealed.

The other word is the skin of an animal, especially when removed for leather: buffalo hides, cowhide.

To tan someone's hide is to beat them.
