fodder

Hay for horses

Fodder is food for livestock, especially dried hay or straw fed to cattle and horses.

The word extends to anything consumed in bulk or used as raw material: cannon fodder (soldiers treated as expendable), fodder for gossip, fodder for late-night comedians.

The implication is abundance without much value—plentiful stuff to be processed or used up.
