paddy

Flooded rice plot

Paddy has two distinct origins.

One is a flooded field for growing rice, or rice still in the husk: workers bent over in the paddy, paddy fields stretched to the horizon.

The other is a slur for an Irish person, from the common Irish name Paddy (from Pádraig).

Paddy wagon likely derives from this, though whether it named the police or those arrested is disputed.
