landfill
Buried waste site
A landfill is a site where garbage and other waste materials are disposed of by burying them in the ground.
Modern landfills are engineered facilities with protective liners and systems to manage the toxic runoff that decomposing waste produces.
The term also works as a verb: The city landfilled thousands of tons of debris after the storm.
Landfill can refer to the waste material itself or to land that has been created by filling in low-lying areas with garbage.
