dike

Earthen water wall

A dike is an embankment built to hold back water and prevent flooding, especially in low-lying coastal areas: The Dutch have maintained dikes for centuries.

Dike also means a long mass of igneous rock that cuts through other rock formations.

As a verb, to dike is to build such barriers.

Separately, dyke (also spelled dike) is slang for a lesbian, often derogatory when used by outsiders but sometimes reclaimed within the community.
