smelt

Ore-refining process

Smelt names two unrelated things.

The fish is a small, silvery species found in cold waters, often fried whole as a delicacy.

The verb smelt means to extract metal from ore by heating: The furnace smelts iron ore into pig iron.

In British English, smelt also serves as past tense of smell: The kitchen smelt of garlic.
