adit
Horizontal mine entrance
An adit is a horizontal entrance to a mine, driven into a hillside rather than down from the surface.
Unlike vertical shafts, adits allow water to drain naturally and ore to be hauled out more easily.
The old adit had collapsed, but you could still see timbers at the entrance.
