Banded copper ore
Malachite is a green mineral, a form of copper carbonate prized for its distinctive banded patterns in varying shades of green.
It has been used since antiquity for ornamental objects, jewelry, and pigment.
Large deposits were historically mined in Russia and Egypt; today it comes mainly from Africa.
The fireplace mantel was inlaid with malachite.
