orbital sander

Circular sanding machine

An orbital sander is a power tool that smooths surfaces by vibrating a sanding pad in small circles or ellipses.

Unlike belt sanders, orbital sanders remove material gently and leave fewer visible scratches, making them suited for finish work: I used the orbital sander to prep the cabinets for paint.

Random orbital sanders add a secondary rotation to prevent swirl marks.
