aluminum oxide
Ruby's chemical composition
Aluminum oxide is a chemical compound of aluminum and oxygen, extremely hard and resistant to heat.
It occurs naturally as corundum; rubies and sapphires are gem-quality forms colored by trace impurities.
Industrial applications include abrasives, ceramics, and electrical insulators.
The white powder form is called alumina: Alumina is refined from bauxite ore.
